Again, no surprise here.  So far, fish oil supplements do not appear  to be effective based on research just like so many other supplements have failed to pass the tests of nutrition research studies.  It may be that the hype is due to whether you are selling the supplements or not.  The benefits of eating fish still remain which reinforces the notion that eating real food instead of taking supplements is the best way to  go.  Some people need supplements like the frail elderly, in pregnancy, vegans and those whose diets are compromised in some way by diseases that affect food intake or absorption of nutrients.

Whole foods offer three main benefits over dietary supplements:

  • Whole foods are complex, in that they contain a variety of nutrients that work together to provide health benefits.
  •  Whole foods, such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes, provide dietary fiber.
  •  Whole foods contain other substances called phytochemcials from fruits and vegetables that can protect us from chronic diseases.
