The metabolic syndrome is a collection of health risks, including high blood pressure, altered blood lipids (primarily high triglycerides, low HDL), high blood glucose, and a large waist circumference. This syndrome increases the chance of developing heart disease, stroke and diabetes. The condition is also known by other names, including Syndrome X, insulin resistance syndrome, and dysmetabolic syndrome. This article discusses the effects of carbohydrate restriction on the health risks of the metabolic syndrome.
